In this blog we would like to highlight artworks depicting the beauty of violin playing. Dating back to the eighteenth century the violin constituted one of key elements associated with the Jewish culture. Klezmer is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe. It is interesting to stop on etymology: klei, means “tools, utensils or instruments of” and zemer, “melody”. Traditional klezmer ensembles were quite small – from one to two violins, clarinet, double bass or tuba, cymbals; also, a flute, a tambourine or a drum with cymbals sometimes.

Impressionistic “Fiddler” by Ahuva “Huvy” Elisha transmits the energy of deep concentration and high emotional involvement. Especially, the instant of inspiration and passion is shown with a Hasidic dance on the background. A canopy of a chuppah in the left side expresses the significance of the moment. Deep blue and green tints surround and absorb an action, as well as add an atmosphere of mystery together with vividness.

“Band” reflects the atmosphere of a shtetl, fabulous and always sensitive. Fiddler is looking right at spectators, but seem not noticing them. Significantly, the bird and sheep are symbolically supporting young musicians. All of them seem to be exhausted, however, aspiring.
