Musicians by Yosl Bergner

Please view artworks by Yosl Bergner presented in Kings gallery

Yosl Bergner was born in Vienna, Austria in 1920 and spent his childhood in Warsaw, Poland. After emigrating to Israel, Yosl Bergner moved from Social Realism, which he preferred to call Social Humanism. Jewish culture of Poland inspired the artist and he conveyed its atmosphere in the paintings and sculptures. The artist transmits sad and joyful melodies of musicians through their glances.

“Fiddler” by Yosl Bergner

“Fiddler” is playing and dreaming alone far away from the town. He is looking detachedly. His melody is, probably, pure and frank. Even though Bergner works with bright colors, this painting, despite its tranquillity, brings light sadness.

“Band” by Yosl Bergner

A shtetl theme especially responds in “Band”. Fiddler is looking at spectators, but right through them. The bird and sheep are supporting young musicians. All of them seem to be exhausted, however, passionate and aspiring. Although the artist deals with common symbols of the Jewish way of life, it does not look feignedly.

“A wedding in A shtetl” by Yosl Bergner

A wedding seems to be fabolous, all the faces are especially kind and happy. Moreover, the composition resembles of a memorable photo made after a chuppah. Small wooden buildings respond to celebrators with soft lights. The painting is very positive and sincere.

Please find a large selection of works by Yosl Bergner, the artist who showed delicate fusion between sadness and joy. Bergner participated in the Venice Biennale in 1956, 1958 and 1962. Also, in 1980, he was awarded the Israel Prize for Painting.
