Zvi Mairovich was born in Poland in 1911. At the age of 18 he was sent to Berlin, there he started his artistic education. Thence he moved to Haifa, where he lived most of his life. In Israel he founded and became a part of the Ofakim Hadashim (New Horizons) group. In particular, they played an important role in the influence of international art on visual arts of Israel. So, their promotion of an abstract art inspired Zvi Mairovich and he changed his style.
Artistic style
Prior to this time he was a landscape artist. The transition was gradual, the artist kept a focus on the subject with the main contrasts highlighted by colors. In “Abstract” contours determine the still-life composition. Mairovich conveyed the texture of objects and the light reflections. All artists of the New Horizons group argued for the universal preference for progress rather than for a unique ideology.
The New Horizons movement introduced a local Israeli version of the style of abstract painting developed in Europe and the United States. Especially, the accent was on the basic elements and “pure” drawings.
Interestingly, Mairovich represented Israel in the Venice Biennale in 1956, 1958, and 1962 as well as the Sao Paulo Bienal of 1953 and 1959.
