Menashe Kadishman was born in 1932. Although Kadishman produced a wide range of art, he remains best remembered as a sculptor and painter who created a great variety of sheep images in different artistic styles including Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and Neo-Expressionism. The artist believed, that “art grows from feelings and not rational calculations alone”. Significantly, the author usually transfers his message through colors and expressive eyes of his heroes, as, for instance, described in a blog about “Gesture to Mondriaan” series.
“Angels”
In hebrew an angel is Malakh (מַלְאַךְ), which means usually a “messenger”. According to the Jewish tradition, words of prayer invoke an angel who collects, purifies and perfects it, and then presents it to G-d. If the word was not clearly pronounced, the angel gives it a new, correct form.
Menashe Kadishman conveyes their unique nature, that consists of half of fire and half of water. The colors and shape mix and convert each moment. Interestingly, the words of our prayer not only call angels, they create angels. Especially these angels are not only the bearers of our words: their essence is our words. It follows that the angels reflect the nature of the words that gave birth to them.

Additionally, our gallery has several sculptures by Menashe Kadishman. Kadishman‘s works are full of references to Holy books. The images of grazing flocks and shepherds appear in his art due to the experience as a shepherd in a kibbutz in his youth. The blog about a shepherd in his art might be interesting. The artist associated himself with the shepherd, and at the 1978 Venice Biennale he presented an actual colored flock of sheep and himself leaded it.
