Chuppah by Zvi Malnovitzer

Please find details of Chuppah by Zvi Malnovitzer

At Kings Gallery Jerusalem, we are deeply honored to feature Huppah, an evocative oil-on-paper composition by the esteemed contemporary Israeli artist Zvi Malnovitzer. Measuring 35 x 50 cm, this painting is a masterful example of Malnovitzer’s ability to bridge the sacred and the secular, offering a profound glimpse into the spiritual intensity of Haredi Jewish life through the lens of European modernism.C

Introduction

Born in 1945 to an ultra-Orthodox family in Bnei Brak, Malnovitzer pursued a courageous artistic path that led him to study in Austria under masters like Ernst Fuchs, a leading figure of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. In Huppah, we see the culmination of this unique background. His style is a distinct form of Expressionism heavily inspired by the dramatic lighting of Rembrandt van Rijn and the fluid, romantic brushstrokes of Francisco de Goya.

The word chuppah (חֻפָּה) means “covering” or “protection.” In Jewish weddings, it symbolizes the home the couple will build together. More than a canopy, the chuppah marks the creation of a new family unit. In Jewish law, this act represents the beginning of a private and sacred domain, one grounded in mutual respect and spiritual intent.

Colors

One of the most striking features of this painting is Malnovitzer’s bold and expressive use of color. The deep purples of the sky contrast with the warm oranges and golds of the setting sun, creating a dramatic yet tender backdrop. In addition, the red canopy glows with vitality, while the whites of the bride’s dress radiate purity. These color choices are not random — they convey mood, emotion, and reverence. They also reflect the artist’s ability to blend light and shadow to express inner spiritual truths.
