“Portrait” by Zvi Malnovitzer

Please view details of the artwork.

Expressionist Portrait of old Jewish religious man. Zvi Malnovitzer brings attention to the subject of wisdom and respectable age. The artist is not using multicolored palette, he creates the face only with shades of beige and small inserts of brighter colors.  Zvi Malnovitzer illuminates the art work by the combination of light reflections. Notably, light reflections together with complex color shades are the only means, that the painter uses to depict wrinkly wise face of the old man.

Moreover,

we feel subjective emotions of the author. In particular, the painter precisely reproduces the mood of the character and sufferings. Furthermore, the old man is almost literally telling his story to the spectators.

Although

Chassid in the portrait looks a bit faraway, he interacts with spectators. The painting set to tranquil meditation, repentance, and, also, spiritual or intellectual reflection.

As there is no background in the painting, the sense of sublimity and loftiness appears. It seems, that the Chassid is flying in his thoughts.

Interestingly,

The expressive, psychologically dense and emotionally suggestive portrait forms the spiritual space around the figure, in which the spectator is invited by the artist.
