Lippincott Janet, Untitled I

Janet Lippincott (1918–2007) was an American artist whose bold, colorful works made her a notable figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Born in New York City, Lippincott grew up in a creative environment that nurtured her artistic inclinations. She studied at the Art Students League in New York, where she was exposed to the dynamic art scene of the 1930s and 1940s. A time when Abstract Expressionism was beginning to take shape.

Influenced by artists like Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock, Lippincott developed a style that was both emotional and structured. She blended gestural brushstrokes with a keen sense of composition.

World War II

During World War II, Lippincott served in the Women’s Army Corps, an experience that deeply impacted her perspective and, subsequently, her art. After the war, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Therefore, the dramatic landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage of the Southwest became a significant influence on her work.

The expansive skies, earthy tones, and vivid colors of the region found their way into her paintings. It added to them a sense of both freedom and grounding. Lippincott spent much of her career in Santa Fe, working in relative isolation from the New York art world. The artist developed a unique voice within the Abstract Expressionist movement.

In particular,

Painting Untitled I, currently available at Kings Gallery in Jerusalem, is a striking example of Lippincott’s mature style. Dominated by a warm yellow background, the canvas is a dynamic interplay of bold colors and expressive forms. Thick, gestural strokes of black, green, and purple intersect with softer washes of orange and pink, creating a sense of movement and depth.

In addition, the composition is divided into distinct sections, with horizontal bands of color near the top suggesting a horizon line, while vertical and diagonal lines add tension and energy. The textured surface, with its visible brushstrokes and layered paint, reveals Lippincott’s hands-on approach to her craft, inviting viewers to feel the emotion she poured into the work.

Chaos and control

This painting embodies Lippincott’s ability to balance chaos and control, a hallmark of her approach to Abstract Expressionism. The vibrant yellow evokes the sunlit landscapes of New Mexico, while the darker, more turbulent marks hint at an inner emotional landscape. On the contrary, the small, rectangular patches of muted green and brown ground the composition. It’s a piece that invites contemplation, encouraging viewers to find their own meaning in its abstract forms.

For those captivated by Lippincott’s work, this painting is available for purchase at Kings Gallery in Jerusalem. Acquiring this piece not only brings a slice of art history into your collection but also celebrates the legacy of an artist. Lippincott fearlessly carved her own path in a male-dominated movement. Janet Lippincott’s work continues to resonate, offering a timeless exploration of color, emotion, and form.
