“Jerusalem by Day and Night” Valentina Sidon

Please find details of “Jerusalem by Day and Night” by Valentina Sidon

On the week of Shavuot, which is one of the Shalosh Regalim, holidays when all Israelites would make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem, we would like to emphasise the depiction of the Western Wall.
The double-sided artwork by Valentina Sidon depicts the holy place in the day and night times. The canvas has an accordion-shaped format. Due to this technique the work from both sides seems to be more volumetric.

The view is from the Jewish Quarter, one of the four traditional quarters of the Old City of Jerusalem. Realistic landscape with prayers in the foreground does not differ in the day and after the sunset. Light rays alternate with bright lamps, illuminating figures in the moments of conversations with the Almighty. Especially, these are the instances of the highest concentration on the reality and the passion.

In the background rises the Mount of Olives or Har ha-Zeitim. Interestingly, it functioned as a place of prayer prior to the building of the Temple and definitely before the establishment of the cemetery. The Red Heifer ceremony was performed on this mountain, the ashes from the animal was used in the ritual purification of persons and objects defiled by a corpse.
