Emmanuel Mané-Katz was a Russian born artist, who was famous for depictions of the Jewish shtetl. The artist moved to Paris during the Civil war. There he took part in the art movement known as the School of Paris. Furthermore, due to participation of many Jewish artists in this movement, Jewish School of Paris was founded. Brighter colors in his later artistic period substituted more somber tints.
An expressionist artwork is full of inner emotional intensity and spirituality. All figures are concentrated on their prayers and internal dialogues. Moreover, due to the color accents and bright tints of the clothes prayers seem to stand out from the wall full of the energy, that this place emits. Even though the artist showed the face of only one man, all three figures have the same emphasis. Especially, Emmanuel Mané-Katz masterfully conveyed sincerity of the poses and gestures, that are full of concentration, calling and worship.

Kings gallery has a collection of works by Emmanuel Mané-Katz. Significantly, the artist won a gold medal at the Paris World’s Fair in 1931 with his painting “The Wailing Wall”. Mané-Katz’s actual home was Paris, however, spiritual one was always the Land of Israel.
