Shomo Bernstein was born in 1886 in Uzda, Russian Empire. The future artist was a son of a rabbi and, moreover, a head of yeshiva. Bernstein was admitted at the famous Mir Yeshiva, and only when he reached the age of 18, his father allowed him to learn the art. After World War I, he went to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where painter Leon Bonnat, who taught at the institution, helped him to receive a scholarship from Baron Rothschild.

In 1914, the artist immigrated to Israel, however, he was exiled to Alexandria, where he made living giving lessons and painting portraits. In 1919, he returned to israel and presented a large solo exhibition at the Herzliya Gymnasium. He was one of the founders of the Hebrew Artists’ Association. In 1924, Schlomo Bernstein participated in the significant “Tower of David Exhibition”.
