In this blog I would like to stop on several sketches by internationally famous artists. Two first are on the pages of books dedicated to the authors.
“Campbell soup can sketch” by Andy Warhol
“Campbell soup can sketch” in book “The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (from A to B and Back Again)” by the artist, a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. Campbell’s Soup Cans series dates back to 1961-1962 and constitutes of 32 canvases. In particular, this work was among the first done with the silk-screening technique. Irving Blum was the dealer who exhibited soup can paintings. Moreover, he organized the first Warhol’s solo pop art show.
Tree Sketch on a Homage Book by Marc Chagall
This gentle sketch of a tree and an attentively looking woman conveys the unique perception of joy and happiness that Marc Chagall depicted in his art. It appears to be a dialogue between smiling photo of the artist and a drawing made with sincere positiveness. Chagall’s subject is life itself, in “its simplicity or its hidden complexity”. He blended the real with fantastic.
“Knight” by Sergei Eisenstein
Eisenstein’ first preserved drawings date back to 1914, when at the end of his mother’s letters readers can see depictions of animals or clowns. In general, his art included sketches for theatre performances and films as well as satirical drawings. “Knight” (1921) is a pencil and charcoal paper sketch. At that time Eisenstein worked for Central Educational Theater and, especially, on production of “Macbeth” together with Sergei Yutkevich, a theatre and film director and screenwriter. Eisenstein designed costumes and props for the performance.
In particular, “Knight” created with rapid strokes is emotionally precise and full of determination, firmness. Eisenstein reckoned, that at the core of any real artistic work was a dissonance (“conflict”) between its content and form, which allowed to convey the author’s state of mind. Thus, a drawing served as a link between the feelings of the artist and the viewer.
