Please find details of Itzchak Tarkay – Untitled, Women Sitting.
In Woman Sitting, a vibrant watercolor on paper measuring 40 x 32 cm, Israeli master painter Itzchak Tarkay once again captures a world of stillness and beauty. The scene feels familiar yet dreamlike — a woman in a flowing dress reclines in a colorful interior, lost in thought or perhaps in observation. Behind her, a mirror reflects another figure, hinting at dialogue, memory, or simply another layer of presence.
This signed work continues the visual story Tarkay is so well known for. In a previous piece, Untitled, Women at Tea Time, we found two elegantly dressed women sharing a moment over fruit and flowers. In Woman Sitting, the setting is more introspective, even cinematic. We are not simply looking at a figure; we are stepping into a moment — one saturated with light, pattern, and quiet expression.
Tarkay’s use of color remains a central force. The woman’s dress glows in shades of yellow, orange, and red — adorned with large, floating flower motifs. Behind her, a lush bouquet of blue flowers bursts into the space, animated yet contained. On the table, fruit and a painted jug nod to still-life tradition, while the mirror behind the subject opens a new layer of narrative — a painting within the painting, echoing Tarkay’s love for layered space.
Artist’s style
Born in 1935 in Subotica (then Yugoslavia), Itzchak Tarkay survived the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp in his early childhood and later immigrated to Israel, where he studied at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. Influenced by French Impressionism, Matisse, and Modigliani, Tarkay developed a unique style that blends decorative beauty with emotional subtlety. His subjects — often women in serene, private settings — embody not just femininity, but also introspection, elegance, and presence.
His works invite the viewer inward. In particular, with every watercolor wash and fluid line, Tarkay communicates softness, poise, and a sense of timeless comfort. The tiled floor, the curve of the chair, the posture of the sitter — each element is placed with care, like visual poetry.
