“The old friends” by Yona Mach

Please view details of “The old friends” by Yona Mach presented in Kings gallery

Between tall and oppressive buildings a couple of old friends is quitly speaking. They seem to be standing there for a long time. The main grey color reflects senescence, sadness and anguish. Moreover, everything is a bit vague, covered with mysteries. Figures’ glances are exhausted and fading. The only people in the abandoned place surrounded by buildings, which also appear to be alive.

The paintings conveyes the silence and a soundscape of the deserted alley. Characters are an inseparable part of this street, they even merge with enormous houses. Particularly, Yona Mach depicts the couple with the same colors as buildings, such as orange and light purple tints of a hat and coat. Also, the used artistic technique is similar, especially the artist does not highlight the old friends, she only places them in the forefront. Interestingly, how the painter works with reflections and shades, which are separate and important characters. For instance, the glare on the sleeve of the right figure turns into and light man’s long thin fingers.

Additionally, the shape of a painting determines its mood. Thin striving upward buldings and thin figures are trappped in a vertical frame.

Yona Mach

Yona Mach immigrated to Israel from Germany in 1934. Surrealism of the 1930s and Impressionism inspired her. She explored and developed a personal kind of magic realism. Radical political philisophies of the 20th century made the artists look for different kinder worlds. So, surrealism became to be a way to describe dreams and feelings.
