Chung Shek is a contemporary artist who lives now in London. Shek spent the childhood in Netherlands, Dutch old masters inspired young painter. His art reminds of dutch paintings of golden era. In particular, the idea of interest in objects and their symbolic meanings that determines the notion of still lives. One of the Shek’s features is very limited number of colors, but at the same time this colors are vivid and form the mood of works. The use of richly saturated colors and their tints cause his dramatic lighting. For example, the artist has created a serie of Ballet dancers where he has depicted the spotlight illumination.
Artistic style
Chung Shek combines classical techniques with his own artistic experiments. He masterfully plays with light reflections and shadows. Transparent tape brightly mirrors the mandarins. Moreover, the whole composition is uncommon. The artist works with the perception of symmetry and balance. Especially there is one fruit in the center and two vertical striving upward containers on the sides. Even though the shape and material of the vase and package is very different, their silhouettes interact. So, probably, it can look like as the scale. Due to munorous mandarin reflections, the sides seem to be counterbalanced.
