Itzhak Tarkay created a world of beautiful discerning ladies. He is well-known as one of the central figures in the modern Israeli figurative movement. The painter and graphic artist found inspiration in French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, particularly in the color sophistication of Matisse and the drawing style of Toulouse-Lautrec. Itzhak Tarkay depicted timeless beauty and mysterious elegance of women, suggesting eternal aesthetic values.
“Women talking” on the terrace are in the midst of a conversation, but at the same time each lady seems to be separated in her own thoughts. Especially, only the barista looks like to be enthusiastic about what is happening. Interestingly, clothing and hair styles of heroines are very different. Colors influence spectators’ perception of women. Unfortunately, the artist has not finished a distant figure in the left. This work is not as bright and vivid as “Women in the coffee shop” surrounded by fruits and flowers. However, in both paintings the heroines look like as in oblivion.

Heroines are not shown dreamy elegant, they are deliberately normal. The background and colors create an oppressive atmosphere. Although shown in bright colors, fruits do not look attractive. Vague images with an accent on grey, brown and dark blue foster a bleak setting.
