“Street view” by Zvi Raphaeli

Please find details of “Street view” by Zvi Raphaeli

In this painting Israeli impressionist artist depicts a sunlit street. It seems to radiate warmth and calmness. Even though the passage is empty, it appears to be very living and encouraging to enter due to the composition of the artwork. Particularly, the unique style of Zvi Raphaeli plunges viewers into the space of the painting. As they are looking into the depth of the work, they are proceeding ahead through the alleyway. Notably, spectators do not see straight lines of the light, the artist illuminates the street by the complex of light reflections and shades on the walls and on the ground.

Over the years Zvi Raphaeli,

changed and developed his unique style. He depicted mostly Israeli street scenes, Jewish life and festivities. Besides, he continued to develop in the spiritual world and in 1960 he was sent to Italy, for three years of service as a rabbi. The artist used impasto technique in his oil on canvas paintings. Impressionistic, but, also, unusual style of the painter drew the attention of critics. Among others, Austrian born Israeli art critic Theodore F. Meisels described the art of Raphaeli in The Jerusalem Post: “Still, one should watch out; Should Raphaeli, who behind his beard is far younger than he looks, ever attempt to harmonize his two worlds, then this genuine painting ‘Chassid’ could develop into an Israeli Chagall…”
