Joan Miro

Joan Miro is a worldwide famous artist, who combined abstract art with surrealism. His paintings are the surprising flight of fantasy. Interestingly, the earlier works by Miro depicted the real space of landscape. One of the challenges for the artist was the representation of the space without constructing an illusion of it. As the artist said: “Shapes sprout and mutate, they switch among themselves and thus create the reality of a universe of signs and symbols”. The ideas of representation and illusionism interested Miro, especially, the problem of depiction of objects and their misleading resemblance with the originals. Also, conversely, an object may be shown by something which does not resemble it at all.

A loss of scale-difference usually removes the painting from the sphere of illusionism. Moreover, the ideas under each line are different: some of them are bearers of meaning and others form structures. The colors become to be independent fields. Notably, as stated by an American art critic and theorist Rosalind E. Krauss, “Miro has created a pictorial mobility that does not simply imitate” the media, it an is “endless chain of associations moving from verbal to visual symbol systems and at the same time never lose a grip on its own objective identity”.
