“Chuppa” by Zvi Malnovitzer

Please find details of “Chuppa” by Zvi Malnovitzer

Zvi Malnovitzer, an expressionist Israeli artist, beautifully depicts the wedding in the twilight. Candles illuminate faces with the same golden color as of the Magen David on the canopy. Women procession is leading the bride to her fiancé.

The word chuppah means covering or protection, this is a literal translation of the Hebrew word  חֻפָּה. Especially, it is intended as a roof or covering for the bride and groom at their wedding. Also, it is the groom’s home, which is from legal perspective a new private domain.

Now, during the celebration of Sukkot it is interesting to discuss the correlation between two temporal constructions – sukkah and chuppa. The Sukkah is a temporary dwelling place, it commemorates the time of the exodus from Egypt. Inter alia, symbolically Sukkah and Chuppah rhyme due to their temporal structure and purpose, as well through the temporal notion of happiness.
