Please view details of “Portrait” by Anna Ticho
This sketch strikes with the accuracy and emotional impression. Ticho’s manner of using charcoal achieves great depth of tone. In particular, through combinations of differently intense strokes the artist manages to create rubbed-in intermediate shadows. Thinner and less expressive lines as well as flecks of dark accretions form the face and especially strengthen shadows of the nostrils and tight lips. The old woman is looking through with her only widely open eye. Her clothes combines separate parts, destroyed by the time.
Anna Ticho is an Israeli landscape painter, who is additionally well known due to her house-museum in the center of Jerusalem. Kings gallery is only seven munutes walk away from this beautiful historic building with a picturesque garden.
Anna Ticho was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Brno. In November 1912 she married her cousin Dr. Abraham Albert Ticho (1883–1960). From the day Anna arrived in the Holy city till the day she died in 1980, the painter lived in Jerusalem, portraying its alleys and hills.
The artist later described her fascination with “the grandeur of the scenery, the bare hills, the large, ancient olives trees, and the cleft slopes … the sense of solitude and eternity.”Anna Ticho bequeathed her beloved house to the Israel Museum for the benefit of Jerusalemites.
Take a look at Ticho’s pencil sketch “Hills”, the depiction of an endless calm view.
