“Wedding” by Zvi Malnovitzer

The details of “Jewish wedding”

Zvi Malnovitzer is an expressionist Israeli artist, well known for depictions of Jewish life scenes. Viewers are able to stay almost inside the painting. Zvi Malnovitzer illuminates the art work by the combination of lights. Furhtermore, the chuppah (the canopy) seems to shine and multiply the light of three candles. The artist precisely emphasizes the faces and certain aspects of the ensemble.

Moreover,

The composition of the work determines its depth and dimensionality. In particular, it looks like as one painting is inside another one. The wood wide wall on the right side behind the man, who is helping to hold the chuppah, reminds of a theatrical decoration. Besides, we can not discern his face, he does not look as alive as other figures. He seems to be outside of the ceremony. However, the child with brightly lit face comes out these borders and his face illuminates the dark right side. All eyes are drawn to the couple, so the center of the painting is shifted a bit to the left. Even postures of all heroes point at the wedding couple.

Speaking about the plot,

The canopy under which a Jewish couple stand during their ceremony is called chuppah. Especially, it is a symbol of a future home of the couple. The red color of the canopy and it’s central position make the painting striving upward, as Magen David on chuppah corresponds with the bright moon. In particular, the artist has depicted the seven blessings which rabbis recite over a cup of wine (sheva brachot).
