David Gerstein is an Israeli contemporary artist and sculptor. From the end of the 1970s he has worked on the expansion of the limits of the two-dimensional painting into the painting in three-dimensions. In particular, his idea was to allocate and cut out the key subjects of each painting and present them separately from their background. Figures go beyond paintings’ borders, artworks do not have standard and traditional frames. So, familiar everyday objects stay freely in space painted in bright colors.
Over time,
David Gerstein has worked out his personal “second-generation pop-art style”. The artist found inspiration in art by Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney. Artist’s passion were wall sculptures, which he created primarily from wood. However, shortly he came up with an idea of the use of laser cutting in art. Later he became the first artist to use multi-layered cutout steel wall-sculptrues.

David Gerstein has explored the tension between public and private, the notion of balconies, which combine home and at the same time are open for public, is analyzed from different perspectives in his art. Childhood memories of Tel Aviv balconies formed one of series. The artist examines the idea of tranfer from one space to another through the changing of usual borders.
Volumniuos “Circles” form a likeness of an old mechanism, where all items influence one another without direct contact. Colors and ornamnets merge the components. Interference and motion occur when surfaces overlap. In the middle there is a branch with a fruit. Especially the small inside painting determines the whole artwork. Probably, it is a forbidden fruit, which “twirled” the world and launch an irrevocable mechanism. The world is full of unpredictable causal relationships. All the processes have different rules – the shapes of figures on the painting. By modifying a trifle, one can come to dramatic consequences, as described in “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury.
