Yosl Bergner was born in Vienna, Austria in 1920 and spent his childhood in Warsaw, Poland. After emigrating to Israel, Yosl Bergner moved from Social Realism, which he preferred to call Social Humanism. Here in his art he created the unique fairy world of kind sad dreamers and butterflies, which is full of allusions to the social problems, that he depicted before. Jewish culture of Poland inspired the artist and he conveyed its atmosphere in the paintings and sculptures.

A sad “Boy riding a horse” reflects the old memories of the childhood. This time will never happen again. Even though the hero is firmly holding the toys, he is looking detachedly. The sculpture is very sincere and, therefore, sorrowful.

A looking forward couple of “Boy and Girl” inspire hope. The butterfly is a symbol of bright and joyful future. Their wide open eyes espress a light sadness.

A shtetl theme especially responds in “Band”. Fiddler is looking at spectators, but right through them. The bird and sheep are supporting young musicians. All of them seem to be exhausted, however, passionate and aspiring.
