Although widely recognized as a sculptor, Menashe Kadishman is famous for hundreds of portraits of sheep each one different from another. However, in this blog I would like to write about the painting with two goats.
“Two Goats”
A goat is a familiar figure in Jewish folklore, especially, due to “Chad Gadya”, the Aramaic song, that Jews sing each year at the Passover night. The tender artwork depicts a goat and a ram at the waterhole. Bright acrylic colors of the sky reflect on the white wool. Beautiful deep eyes are green and brown. Figures are coming from the upper side; they seem to be magnificent and calm. Combination of limited tints create the harmony and convey the mystery and wonder of nature.
Kadishman’s unique approach and spirit can be partly explained by artist’s belief: “art grows from feelings and not rational calculations alone.” He beautifully conveyed the motion and the harmony of natural forms in sculptures. For instance, “Bind” is a part of a project dedicated to the Sacrifice of Isaac. His metal artworks impress with their subtlety and streamlined black forms.
In addition, check our blog about “Angels” by Menashe Kadishman. Also, his “Blue sheep head” might be interesting. Especially, it appears to be frightening due to the color tints, paint leaks and a small light window in the right side. Moreover, the window seems to be getting smaller and smaller, destroying the way off.
