Although widely recognized as a sculptor, Menashe Kadishman is famous for hundreds of portraits of sheep each one different from another. These paintings tell about nothing and everything at the same time. The first major appearance of the sheep in his art was at the 1978 Venice Biennale. In particular, Menashe Kadishman presented an actual flock of sheep and himself as shepherd. He colored the flock and described as a living art.
“Sheep on pink”
This tender square painting is airy. There is a contour only in the bottom of the image, it a bit lands the head, that seems to be ready to fly and soar. Big white sheep’s ears even resemble wings. Expressive and carefully painted eyes look at spectators from the interiority. The shades and gentle color layers create the sense of depth and mystery.
Kadishman’s unique approach and spirit can be partly explained by artist’s belief: “art grows from feelings and not rational calculations alone.” He beautifully conveyed the motion and the harmony of natural forms in sculptures. For instance, “Bind” is a part of a project dedicated to the Sacrifice of Isaac. His metal artworks impress with their subtlety and streamlined black forms.
