Menashe Kadishman is a famous Israeli artist, who often challenged and surprised audiences. Particularly, he is best remembered as the sculptor and painter who created a great variety of sheep images in different styles.
“Red Sheep”
This large piece is a part of “crowned sheep series”, that is recognizable easily due to bright paints forming a beautiful resemblance of crowns.
Golden semicircle around the head reminds a nimbus of holiness. Also, in addition to compositional resemblance the combination of red and gold colors create an allusion to the icon.
“Herzl’s Vision”
Theodore Herzl by Menashe Kadishman is observing his living dream, a Jewish National Home in Israel. As he stated in his book “Old New Land”: “If you will it, it is no dream”. Sketches of buildings and living towns are coming from the water and Magen Davids symbolize ideological power of happening. In particular, this painting transmits personal magnetism of Herzl and his passion, that helped a young editor of Vienna’s Neue Freie Presse to fundamentally transform Jewish history.
“Two Goats”
A goat is a familiar figure in Jewish folklore, especially, due to “Chad Gadya”, the Aramaic song, that Jews sing each year at the Passover night. The tender artwork depicts a goat and a ram at the waterhole. Bright acrylic colors of the sky reflect on the white wool. Beautiful deep eyes are green and brown. Figures are coming from the upper side; they seem to be magnificent and calm.
