Raanan Yoram – Cherub’s Kiss

Please find details of “Cherub’s Kiss” by Yoram Raanan

In Cherub’s Kiss, Raanan Yoram opens a gateway to the sacred. He guides us beyond the limits of earthly experience. The painting reveals a realm where divine mysteries unfold.

At the heart of the composition, two cherubim lean toward one another, their wings glowing with celestial light. In Jewish tradition, the cherubim are not mere angels; they are guardians of spaces imbued with the divine presence. According to the Torah, they protected the entrance to Gan Eden after humanity’s exile, ensuring no return without divine permission. Later, they adorned and guarded the cover of the Ark of the Covenant in the Holy of Holies, the holiest place within the Mishkan and later the Temple.

Kiss

The symbolism runs deep: the cherubim were sculpted as part of the Ark’s lid, their wings outstretched, gazing at each other when Israel fulfilled the will of the Almighty. As the Talmud teaches in Tractate Yoma, during the festivals of the Shalosh Regalim — Pesach, Shavuot, and Sukkot — the people would see the cherubim embracing and kissing. This vision served as a divine reminder of God’s profound love for Israel, embodying the unbreakable covenant between them. When Israel turned away, however, the cherubim faced apart, symbolizing distance and separation.

The lower half of the painting, filled with rising roses, reflects this yearning for closeness with the divine. The blossoms seem to ascend like prayers, reaching toward the radiance above. The golden beams streaming from the cherubim dissolve the boundaries of form and matter.
