Le village noir by Marc Chagall

We are glad to present the sketch for “Le village noir” by Marc Chagall. The work dates back to 1951, created with pastel, gouache and Indian ink on black paper it captivates by bright illuminated silhouettes.

The red cow is in the center represents the life itself, an animal that is so close to humans. It is going from one Chagall’s canvas to another together with the small depiction of hugging couple highlighting love, tenderness and kindness. Beautiful story of the relationship with Bella – floating in the embrace in the right side of the sketch.

Also, another permanent and so emotional aspect, that forms the setting are home memories. His native Vitebsk with small, fabulous houses. The cozy lamp hanging above the landscape kindly lights this miraculous world with more golden colors then the elegant crescent.

Unique approach creates in each detail the playful untold message, that seems to be very personal and symbolic. For instance, in the top right corner there is a small flying angelical figure with, probably, flowers in his hands. The intense blue reflexive tone became to be more present in the last decades of the artistic career.

In addition, the official certificate from the Marc Chagall committee accompanies the art piece and there is an artist’s signature in the bottom left corner.
