David Sharir “Sisra’s Defeat”

Discover a dynamic and symbolic depiction of one of the Bible’s most celebrated victories in Sisra’s Defeat, an oil on paper by the distinguished Israeli artist David Sharir. Measuring 53 × 39 cm, this vibrant work transforms the ancient story from the Book of Judges into a joyful, decorative tableau that contrasts chaos with peace.

About the Artist

David Sharir was born in 1938 in Tel Aviv to Russian immigrants from Bessarabia. He began his formal art training at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. Moreover, he continued his studies in Italy at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence and at the University of Rome. In addition, Sharir explored architecture and theatre design, experiences that later shaped his strong sense of composition and narrative staging. He held his first exhibition at the age of nineteen and has since developed a highly recognisable style that blends folk-art traditions, Persian miniature influences, and joyful Israeli modernism.

Consequently, his works frequently draw on Jewish biblical themes, festivals, and symbolic animals, rendered with bright colours, intricate patterns, and a distinctive naïve sophistication. Sharir’s pieces appear in major private and public collections worldwide and remain sought after for their warmth and storytelling power.

The Artwork

In Sisra’s Defeat, Sharir organises the composition within his signature graceful arched frame. The upper brown section bursts with energy and movement: Sisera’s Canaanite warriors in colourful helmets and armour tumble through the air amid flying arrows and patterned shields, capturing the moment of their rout in the battle against the Israelite forces led by Deborah and Barak (Judges 4–5).

Furthermore, the lower light-blue section presents a completely different atmosphere — a peaceful orchard filled with blossoming trees. Women in folk dress gather flowers or fruit, a bearded farmer works the land with a sickle, small girls dance in celebration, and a fallen warrior lies quietly among the blossoms. Thus, Sharir masterfully contrasts the violent defeat of Sisera’s army above with the serene aftermath of victory below, evoking the peace and renewal that followed the Israelites’ triumph and Jael’s decisive act. The entire scene glows with decorative patterns, white blossoms, and a folk-naïve charm that turns biblical drama into visual poetry.

Artistic Significance

What distinguishes this work is Sharir’s ability to condense an entire biblical narrative into a single, harmonious image. He does not focus on violence alone; instead, he celebrates the transition from war to peace, from chaos to order. In this way, the painting bridges ancient scripture with modern Israeli visual language and invites viewers to reflect on themes of deliverance, renewal, and the enduring power of faith. The intimate yet impactful scale (53 × 39 cm) makes it perfect for any wall, where its glowing colours and rhythmic patterns continue to reward repeated viewing.
