“NEW YORK CITY” By Keith Haring

Please find details of “NEW YORK CITY” By Keith Haring

Keith Haring, a worldwide famous American artist, whose works remind prehistoric “primitive” art. His paintings with schematic depictions of human figures and animals constitutes rows of repetitive patterns. Inspired by Egyptian hieroglyphic, the painter explained his attitude toward the sign and symbol: “I am intrigued with the shapes people choose as their symbols to create language.” “There is within all forms a basic structure, an indication of the entire object with a minimum of lines, that becomes a symbol. This is common to all languages, all people, all times.”

“New-York”

Cartoon-like artworks by Haring are commonly political or social statements, that can be found everywhere, on the high street, on the gallery wall, in collectors’ homes. Ink drawing on “New-York city” map features one figure formed from the three others. Even though it has three pairs of legs and arms there is just one head. New-York seems to be shown as a big, united organism, that can easily take one’s identity and insist on everyone “dancing” in the same way.

The artist explained his shift from abstraction, especially, by the possibility of the universal impact of signs and symbols, that people of all languages can read. Captivated by the theory of communication, Haring chose the primitive code to speak and motivate.

Check our blog about his “Colorful figures”, that are displayed in our gallery. Colorful figures seem to dance on the black background, resembling the flashes of bright lights. Reducing drawings to several lines, the painter creates a symbolic alphabetical system.
