“Jerusalem alleyway” by Zvi Raphaeli

Please view details of artwork “Jerusalem alleyway”

In this painting Israeli impressionist artist depicts a narrow gloomy Jerusalem alleyway. It seems like building are pressuring the couple of figures. Moreover, they appear to get thinner and thinner as far as they are moving forward. The unique style of Zvi Raphaeli plunges viewers into the space of the painting. Furthermore, the composition is organized in the way, that makes viewers feel invited into the narrow pass. As they are looking into the depth of the work, they are proceeding ahead through the alleyway.

It is interesting,

How artist deals with light reflections and shades on the buildings. Spectators can hardly determine the real walls and shadows of the passers-by through the alleyway. If you look closely, you will note the silhouette in the foreground, that reminds of a dog or cat. Obviously, this work is full of mystery and ambiguity. It sets to calm reflection, but at the same time, hints at limitation of the thinking. People are just small shadows in the world, that is full of secrets. Jerusalem with its unique history knows about human lives and destinies a lot.

Notably,

Spectators do not see straight lines of the light, the artist illuminates the street by the complex of light reflections and shades on the walls and on the ground.
