Kings Gallery in Jerusalem proudly presents an original drawing by the world-renowned Israeli master, Yaacov Agam. Measuring 28 x 23 cm., this rare, hand-drawn paper work offers a fascinating glimpse into Agam’s conceptual process and signature symbolic language.
Artist Biography: Yaacov Agam
Born Yaacov Gipstein in Rishon LeZion in 1928, Agam stands as a central figure in 20th-century modern art and a pioneer of the Kinetic and Optical Art movements. The son of a rabbi and Kabbalist, Agam studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem before moving to Paris in 1951.
Agam revolutionized abstract art by introducing motion, time, and viewer interaction into his creations. Grounded in Jewish thought, his philosophy rejects static forms. Instead, he creates art that changes dynamically as the viewer moves around it, reflecting the spiritual principle that reality remains constantly fluid and in flux. Major institutions worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, feature his iconic works.
The Geometry
This original marker drawing functions as a raw, intimate study of Agam’s core structural motifs—specifically the Star of David (Magen David) and dynamic color trajectories.
At the top and bottom of the composition, Agam deconstructs the Star of David into its constituent parts: pointing-down and pointing-up triangles alongside the completed star.
Across the center, four parallel curved lines in primary and secondary hues (red, green, blue, yellow) sweep across the sheet in a wave-like cadence. This kinetic flow introduces visual rhythm, transforming a flat surface into a suggestion of continuous motion. Near the center right, Agam layers multiple signatures and calligraphic flourishes in corresponding colored markers, turning his signature itself into an integrated element of the artwork’s visual rhythm.
For Fine Art Collectors
While Agam is widely known for his large-scale sculptures and kinetic prints, hand-drawn preparatory compositions like this drawing possess historical value.
