Yosl Bergner, one of Israel’s most respected modern artists, created “The Land III” as part of his powerful series (please take a look at “The Land I”) exploring the connection between people and their homeland. This evocative oil on canvas painting (40 x 53 cm) masterfully depicts a beach scene with circus tents, dramatic skies, and the vast sea — blending realism with deep emotional and symbolic resonance.

Yosl Bergner
Yosl Bergner (1920–2017) (also known as Josl Bergner) is a well-known Israeli painter. He was born Joseph Vladimir Bergner in Vienna, Austria, and he grew up in Warsaw, Poland, in a family where his father, the Yiddish poet Melech Ravitch, influenced him early on. In 1937, he left because of rising antisemitism and moved to Australia. Moreover, he studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne, served in the Australian Army during World War II, and created his own style that mixes realism, expressionism, and surreal touches. Furthermore, after he settled in Israel in the late 1940s and took the name Yosl, he focused on themes of migration, memory, the Holocaust, and connection to the land. Consequently, his paintings often show emotional layers, nostalgia, and a balance of sadness and warmth. In addition, he received the Israel Prize for Art in 1980.
Bergner is celebrated for his expressive figurative and landscape paintings that often carry allegorical undertones. His works frequently reflect themes of Jewish identity, displacement, memory, and the complex relationship with the Land of Israel. His distinctive style combines rich, earthy tones with atmospheric lighting and a sensitive, humanistic touch.
The Artwork: “The Land III”
In “The Land III”, Bergner presents a striking coastal vista. Colorful circus tents with fluttering flags stand on golden sands, creating a festive yet transient atmosphere. The dramatic, cloudy sky and the calm sea in the distance — complete with a distant ship — evoke a sense of longing, arrival, and the passage of time.
The painting belongs to a series where Bergner contemplates “The Land” — a central motif in Israeli art and Zionist consciousness. The juxtaposition of temporary circus structures against the eternal landscape symbolizes the tension between impermanence and rootedness, migration and belonging.
Significance
Yosl Bergner’s work stands out for its ability to fuse European artistic traditions with the spirit of Israel. His landscapes are never purely decorative — they carry narrative depth and emotional weight. “The Land III” invites viewers to reflect on themes of home, exile.
