Reuven Rubin transformed the landscape of Israel into one of the defining subjects of modern Israeli art. Winding roads, ancient olive trees, shepherds, donkeys, hills, and distant cities fill his paintings with a distinctive sense of place.

Three works — Road to Bet-Lehem, Road to Safed, and Early Morning — reveal Rubin’s fascination with journeys through the land. Rather than simply depicting particular locations, Rubin invites the viewer to travel through them.
Painting the Land of Israel
Born in Galați, Romania, in 1893, Rubin first came to the Land of Israel in 1912 to study at the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem. After continuing his artistic education in Europe, he returned in the early 1920s and began developing a visual language shaped by the local landscape.
Olive trees, Galilean hills, shepherds, villages, and biblical sites soon became recurring motifs. European modernism influenced Rubin’s simplified forms, but the light and landscape of the Land of Israel gave his work its distinctive character.
Road to Bet-Lehem
A winding road immediately draws the viewer into Road to Bet-Lehem. Beginning in the foreground, it crosses the hills and leads toward the distant city. A traveler and his animals move along the road, while olive trees and cypresses punctuate the landscape.
Rubin keeps the figures small, allowing the land to dominate the composition. Soft sandy tones and touches of blue create an atmosphere of distance and stillness.
The road also turns looking into traveling. Our eyes follow its curves toward Bethlehem, joining the journey through a landscape filled with historical and biblical associations.
Road to Safed
Road to Safed presents another journey through the Israeli landscape. A traveler and his donkey move among old olive trees toward Safed, one of Judaism’s four traditional holy cities.
Here, the trees command attention. Their trunks and branches create a delicate rhythm across the composition. Rubin often gave olive trees an almost human presence, transforming a familiar feature of the Mediterranean landscape into one of his most recognizable motifs.
Significantly, Rubin focuses on the road to Safed, rather than the city itself. The destination remains beyond the immediate scene. The experience of approaching it becomes the subject.
Early Morning
Morning light creates a quieter journey in Early Morning. A shepherd moves between slender olive trees as the landscape awakens around him.
Rubin reduces the scene to a few essential elements: figure, trees, earth, and sky. The shepherd never dominates his surroundings. Instead, he becomes part of the landscape and its gentle rhythm.

Roads connect these three paintings. They lead toward ancient cities, pass between olive trees, and guide both travelers and viewers through the land. Olive trees provide another connection, suggesting rootedness and continuity while the roads introduce movement.
