“Red sheep” by Menashe Kadishman

Details of “Red sheep” by Menashe Kadishman

Menashe Kadishman is a famous Israeli artist, who often challenged and surprised audiences. Particularly, he is best remembered as the sculptor and painter who created a great variety of sheep images in different styles.

“Red Sheep”

This large piece is a part of “crowned sheep series”, that is recognizable easily due to bright paints forming a beautiful resemblance of crowns. Take a look at another more tender  with similar hair-dresses, that create fabulousness and magic aura.

Golden semicircle around the head reminds a nimbus of holiness. Also, in addition to compositional resemblance the combination of red and gold colors create an allusion to the icon.

Moreover,

Sometimes crowns become to be attributes of  characters. Instantly, “Dark crowned sheep” looks sinister. Her head-dress closes her eyes, thus, it appears to be cunning and wicked. Shades and saturated colors add anxiety to the artwork, especially rich yellow. Narrow eyes look as if past the audience. On the contrary, “Three crowned sheep” include three different piercing gazes. Particularly, there is a sensation, that viewer is analyzed for three perspectives. However, this painting does not scare, it tunes to meditation.

Besides,

Please find the selection of artworks by Menashe Kadishman. The blog about a shepherd might be interesting. At the 1978 Venice Biennale the artist presented an actual flock of colored sheep and himself leaded it. Also, take a look at the post Horse by Menashe Kadishman and especially at “Horse With Bird”, all characters of it seem to be flying upward and jumping on a rainbow.
