Ludwig Blum

Ludwig Blum was born in Czechoslovakia in 1891 where he excelled in sports and was a founding member of the local “Maccabi”. He later studied painting in Prague, Vienna, Paris and Amsterdam, and finally immigrated to Israel in 1923. Blum was an academic painter who painted European-style realistic images. He usually painted Israel’s landscapes, specialising in views of Jerusalem and the Judean desert. His ability to capture the unique desert light at sunset is quite remarkable. In 2009 Beit Hatfutsot Museum in Tel-Aviv held a beautiful retrospective show of Blum’s work titled “The land of light and promise”. Watch the video here. In 2011, the Ben Uri Museum in London showed 35 works from that exhibition under the same title.
