Pablo Picasso “Rider and Horse”

Please find details about Pablo Picasso “Rider and Horse” by Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso’s “Rider and Horse,” created in December 1968, exemplifies the artist’s innovative approach to ceramics during his later years. This terracotta piece, measuring 22 by 22 centimeters, features a black engobe finish and is part of a limited edition of 200 copies. Our is number 12/200.

In the late 1940s and 1950s, the artist began exploring ceramic art, collaborating with the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris, France. His ceramic works feature playful forms and experimental techniques, often blending functional pottery with sculptural artistry. “Rider and Horse” is a testament to this phase, where Picasso reimagined traditional subjects through his unique lens.

The piece depicts a stylized rider atop a horse, rendered with Picasso’s signature abstraction. The black engobe—a liquid clay slip—applied to the terracotta surface, adds depth and contrast, highlighting the dynamic forms. In particular, this work reflects the artist’s ongoing fascination with equestrian themes, which appeared throughout his career, symbolizing movement and vitality.
