Itzchak Tarkay was born in 1935 in Subotica, along the Yugoslav-Hungarian border. When Tarkay reached nine years of age, the Nazis forced him and his family into the Mauthausen concentration camp. Fortunately, the family survived the ordeal, and after Allied forces liberated the camp, they immigrated to Israel in 1949.
In Israel, Tarkay actively pursued his immense artistic talent. He studied at the prestigious Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem. Later, he enrolled in and graduated from the Avni Institute of Art in Tel Aviv. Prominent Israeli masters mentored him, yet Tarkay ultimately forged his own distinctive aesthetic path. He drew immense inspiration from French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
