Geometric Shapes (1980) by Dmitry Groman

Please find details of “Geometric Shapes” (1980) by Dmitry Groman

Groman’s paintings often feature powerful geometric forms, sweeping curves, and layered textures that create depth and emotional resonance. To objectively evaluate the plastic language of Geometric Shapes, one must look to the academic and ideological environment that shaped the artist. Dmitry Semenovich Groman (1924–2001) was a prominent figure in the post-war Soviet underground, a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR.

The most critical catalyst in his creative evolution was his involvement with the legendary “New Reality” studio, led by the influential theoretician and educator Eli Beliutin. Groman was among the avant-garde artists who participated in the historic 1962 Manege Exhibition. This exhibition became a watershed moment in Soviet cultural history, drawing severe ideological condemnation from Premier Nikita Khrushchev and effectively forcing abstract art into the cultural underground.
In his later years, Groman immigrated to Israel, where his artistic system underwent further synthesis, absorbing the light and atmospheric textures of the Mediterranean region. Today, his works are preserved in premier institutional collections, including the State Tretyakov Galler, the State Russian Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

Tension

In “Geometric Shapes”, the most interesting is a point of tension, that seams to include all the layers of energy. The artist creates the transparent planes that are reaching for it. This cluster of sensations, emotions fascinate, it seems to be moving.

Groman masterfully orchestrates a visual symphony of overlapping forms places in their specific places. Bold triangular elements anchor the composition, while sweeping red, blue, and turquoise curves create dynamic tension and flow. The rich impasto technique adds tactile depth, with earthy browns and golden yellows contrasting against cooler tones to evoke both stability and energy.
The painting balances order and spontaneity – hard edges meet organic movement.

Created on wood panel, “Geometric Shapes” possesses a unique material presence that enhances its sculptural quality. The rigid, organic texture of the wood panel resists the uniformity of the brushstroke, allowing the natural grain to subtly manifest beneath the oil.
