Please find details of two artworks “Shema Israel I and II” by Aryanna Garber
A graduate of Columbia University, Aryanna Garber is an award-winning playwright and artist based in New York City. Inspired by the mysticism of the Hebrew alphabet, Aryanna infuses her work with both the spiritual and textual creating pieces that speak not only to the minds, but also to the hearts.
Two works by Garber presented in our gallery feature the phrase שמע ישראל. The artist painted over and over again to represent the essence of the individual in the beauty of a community. As the artist explained to us: “A phrase we repeat alone and together to represent who we and where we come from. Whether we’re standing alone or together Hashem is always with us”. Two versions of the piece – with brighter and more restrained colors. Blueish and greenish canvas suggests the landscapes with the forests and ponds. On the other hand, the orange and yellow colors might mirror the sunset. Abstracts inspire the wonder, they are thought-provoking. Paintings are composed as the setting for the prayer.

Take a look at the blog “Reuven Rubin and His Love to Eretz Israel” about a pioneering figurative Israeli artist of the mid-20th and one of the creators of the new Eretz-Israel style. Also, the crossing of colors and all the intersections of lions and letters in “Shema Israel” remind of passionate pieces by Ora Nissim, full of layers and luminous tints.
