Bram Bogart (1921–2012) was a Belgian-Dutch painter and one of the most radical figures in post-war European abstraction. Born in Delft and later a Belgian citizen, he pushed paint to its physical limit — building thick, sculptural surfaces where colour becomes mass. His “matter paintings,” made from a dense mix of pigment, oil, varnish and siccative troweled into deep relief, sit between painting and sculpture and place him alongside the CoBrA and Art Informel generation.
