Yaacov Agam; Israeli Artist
Born 1928 Rishon LeZion, Israel
Yaacov Agam Innovator, pioneer and leading exponent of optical and kinetic art. Morever, best known for his three-dimensional paintings and sculptures.
Agam’s work is usually abstract, kinetic art, with movement, viewer participation and frequent use of light and sound. His works are placed in many public places. His best known pieces in Kings Gallery are: Megillaht Ester, Geometric Mirror, Magen David and his famous Kiddush Cup.
Early Life
Agam grew up to a Russian rabbi ” Yehoshua Gibstein” in an early Jewish settlement in Israel. After learning to draw at a very young age, Agam studied art in Jerusalem. Zurich, and also Paris. While in Zurich, Johannes Itten was his teacher and had a great influence on Agam and his art! In addition, Agam was also influenced by the painter and sculptor Max Bill.
His Career,
At the age of 25 he held his first one-man exhibition: “Peintures en Mouvement” (“Paintings in Movement”), in Paris. where he settled. Clearly, His work included vibrating and tactile elements, as well as manipulable sculptures.
As far as Israeli art is concerned; Agam is credited with introducing geometric abstraction. His best-known series of works, which are comprised of painted stripes that appear to shift and oscillate when the observer alters their viewpoint. Importanttly, became known as “Agamographs.”
Notable Creations
The artist produced public commissions, including the world’s largest Menorah. It is installed at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street in New York City, which light up every year durinhg Hanukkah. and Star of Peace for Ben-Gurion university that fused the five-pointed star of Islam with the six-pointed Star of David.
Agam has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions at many museums; in Paris, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, New york and many more!
