Yosl Bergner is one of Israel’s most distinguished and important artists. Born in Vienna, Bergner grew up in a family that valued culture and the spirit; His father was a poet who translated some of Franz Kafka’s books into Yiddish. His mother was a singer and his uncle Moshe who was a painter had a great impact on him.

Early Life

His sister and he immigrated to Australia at the age of 17, where he attended the Melbourne Academy of the Arts. Yosl surrounded himself with cultural figures, including the poet Yosl Birstein, who became his closest friend for decades to come.
Yosl Bergner’s wife, Audrey, is a painter. The couple immigrated to Israel together in 1950. Their home became a meeting place for intellectuals of sorts – first in Safed, and then on Bilu Street in central Tel Aviv a few years later. After immigrating to Israel, he changed his first name to Yosl. Soon he became one of the busiest and most admired artists in Israel.
