Yosl Bergner- Oil Lamp Dedicated to Boris Carmi- Sketch- 46 x 27 cm
Artist: Yosl Bergner

Title: Oil Lamp (with Dedication to Boris Carmi)

Technique: Drawing on Paper

Size: 46 x 27 cm

Price: $550

About Yosl Bergner:

Yosl Bergner was born in Vienna, Austria in 1920 and spent his childhood in Warsaw, Poland. He took painting lessons before immigrating to Australia in 1937. Bergner served four years in the Australian army in WWII. He left Australia in 1948 and after two years of traveling and exhibiting in Paris, Montreal and New York, he settled in Israel. He lived in Safed until moving to Tel Aviv in 1957 where he lived until his death in 2017. Bergner’s canvases draw their images from his childhood world, from Yiddish and from the Jewish culture of Poland. Although he did not personally experience the Holocaust, his works are overshadowed by the trauma of the Jewish refugee. Broken furniture and kitchen utensils, clowns, kings and angels, characters from Kafka’s stories, children’s toys, flowers, and pioneers are only part of his wide range of themes.  These old instruments symbolize the distorted and poor world of wars, secrets, and darkness. Although he generally paints Jewish themes, Bergner is sensitive to the plight of all suffering people and transmits that compassion in his work. Yosl Bergner’s allegorical paintings are a tribute to his Zionistic upbringing and sensitivity to the dangers and destruction that consumed the Jewish people during the Second World War.

Size: 40.5 x 31.5 cm

Price: $350

Emanuel Glicen Romano or Emanuel Glicenstein (1897? – 1984) was a painter born in Italy. He emigrated to America and spent some time in Safed in Israel. where he organized a museum for his father’s work. Emanuel Glicenstein was born in Rome on 23 September 1897. His father Henryk Glicenstein was a sculptor and he was living in Rome with his wife Helena (born Hirszenberg) when Emanuel was born. His father obtained Italian citizenship and adopted the name, Enrico. Emanuel was brought up in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, England, and Poland. In 1926, Emanuel and his father sailed for New York. They briefly visited Chicago. Glicenstein’s sister, Beatrice, and mother joined them in New York years later. Romano changed his name when he was in America and some have erroneously thought this was to avoid Jewish discrimination. However, Romano changed his name in order that he could create his own success and to avoid being accused of exploiting his father’s fame. In 1936 Romano was working for the Federal Art Project creating murals (see picture). During and immediately after World War II, Romano created a series of allegorical works depicting graphic holocaust images that were held closely by the family after his passing. One of these works is in the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg Florida. Emanuel’s father died in 1942 in a car accident before they could travel to Israel. In 1944 Romano exploited the studies he had completed at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago when he taught at the City College of New York. He moved to Safed in Israel in 1953 to set up a museum in his father’s memory. In 1984 Romano died and the following year the Glicenstein Museum became the Israel Bible Museum and many valuable paintings were stored away.

David Hendler - Red Roof Cabin - 50.5 x 36 cm
Artist: David Hendler

Title: Red Roof Cabin

Technique: Oil on Cardboard

Size: 50.5 x 36 cm

Price: $600

About David Hendler:

David Hendler (1904 – 1984) was among the few “individualists to the extreme” that have chosen differently. His personal character and his qualities as a painter and a drawer are outstanding. Hendler was born in Kiev, Russia. He acquired his education and ideology as an artist in Prague, the city to which his family moved from Russia. There he studied drawing from Prof. Pichel of the academy of art. At the age of 20, he left Prague and went to the land of Israel (then called Palestine). He had consciously decided not to make a career out of his art but rather take a proletarian approach towards it. He used to go from door to door in Tel-Aviv and offer his paintings and drawings like a peddler, for ridiculously low prices. This way he turned his back to galleries, museums, and any other representatives of the art’s establishment, and chose a life of hardship and poverty.
